How Much Should You Spend on Your First Book?

You have a budget. Where should it go? What is worth paying for, what is free and neglected anyway, and what can wait until the book itself is right.
How Much Should You Spend on Your First Book? image

Twenty thousand rupees, allocated two ways. Same money, same book, very different outcome.

How it usually goes

Editing — light pass₹2,000

Cover — template₹3,000

Interior layout₹1,500

Facebook and Instagram ads₹13,500

A book that was not ready, shown to a great many people.

How it should go

Editing — proper₹9,000

Cover — original₹6,000

Interior layout₹3,000

ISBN₹0

Description and keywords₹0

Ads — a small test₹2,000

A book that holds up, shown to fewer people first.

Our guides on what self-publishing costs answer what things are priced at. This one answers the question that comes next, once you have a number in mind and have to decide where it goes.

The rule underneath all of it

⚖ Before Changes the Book. After Changes the Audience.

Money spent before publication changes what the book is. Money spent after publication changes only how many people see it.

Every allocation decision follows from that sentence. A weak book with a large ad budget is a weak book that more people ignored — and a book a thousand people saw once and dismissed is harder to relaunch than one nobody has seen.

It is the mistake we see most often across 3,100-plus authors. The edit gets economised, the cover is whatever came with the package, and then real money goes behind ads for something that was not ready to be looked at.

Spend here first

💰 What Is Actually Worth Paying For

Editing

The only spend that changes the book

Everything else here changes how the book is presented. This changes what it says. If the budget forces a choice between a good edit and anything else, the edit wins — no cover is good enough to rescue a chapter that does not work.

The cover

The highest return after editing

Readers decide in about a second, on a thumbnail, on a phone. Our cover design guide cites the figure: 79 per cent of readers say the cover drives their purchase decision. An original cover is the difference between looking published and looking self-published.

Interior layout

Cheap, and unmistakable

Typesetting costs a fraction of the other two and is the difference between a book and a Word file that got printed. Nobody praises good typesetting. Everybody notices bad typesetting.

Those three are the book. Everything after this is about getting it in front of people, which only works once there is a book worth showing them.

The best return on this page

🎁 Free, and Neglected Anyway

These cost nothing and are skipped more often than anything you would pay for. The return per rupee is infinite, because the rupee is zero.

🏷 Your ISBN

Free in India through the government agency. Authors still manage to end up without one, or with one that belongs to somebody else. Our ISBN guide covers it.

🔍 Your description and keywords

The single highest-leverage thing you control after publishing, and most listings go live with a half-finished description and seven empty keyword boxes. It costs an afternoon. How to write them properly.

💬 The people who already know you

Your WhatsApp groups, your colleagues, your alumni network, the association you belong to. The first fifty copies almost always come from here, and no advertising budget reaches them better than you do.

⭐ Honest early reviews

Readers trust them more than any paid placement, and they cost nothing but asking. Getting reviews without breaking Amazon’s rules.

An author who does all four of those and spends nothing on marketing will usually outsell one who does none of them and spends twenty thousand.

Not never. Later.

⏳ What Can Wait

None of these are a waste of money. Every one of them works. They work once the book, the cover and the listing are right, and they are expensive ways to find out that something earlier in the chain is not.

Paid advertising

Ads send traffic to a listing. If the cover does not stop the scroll and the description does not close the sale, you are paying to show people something that is not converting. Fix the listing, then advertise it.

An author website

Useful once you have more than one book, a mailing list, or speaking enquiries to field. For a first-time author with a single title, the Amazon page and a good LinkedIn profile do the same work for nothing.

An audiobook

A real and fast-growing format in India. It is also a second production project. Worth doing once the print edition has found readers, not alongside it.

A press release

Works when there is news. A book existing is not news. A book written by a surgeon about a condition nobody explains to patients is news. Have the angle first.

A book trailer

Fine, and occasionally very good. Never the reason anybody bought a book.

The sequence matters more than the list. Production first, then reach — which is why publishing packages are usually tiered, with marketing layered on top of a complete production base rather than sold instead of one.

Three real budgets

💵 What Each Budget Should Buy

Rough figures, and they vary with page count and genre. The proportions are the useful part.

About ₹10,000

The essentials, done properly

Editing, a decent cover, clean interior, ISBN, eBook and print-on-demand listing. No marketing spend at all — your network and your listing do that work. This is a complete, credible book, and it is enough.

About ₹25,000

Essentials, plus reach

Everything above with a stronger edit and an original cover, international distribution, and a modest, measured advertising test once the listing converts. The point of the extra money is a better book first and wider availability second.

About ₹60,000

A launch, not just a book

For an author with a reason to invest — a practice to build, a speaking career, an institution behind the book. Premium design, audiobook, a website, sustained promotion. Only sensible when the book is a business asset rather than a personal milestone.

Notice what does not change. The edit, the cover and the interior are in all three, because they are the book. The extra money buys reach and polish, in that order. If a quote inverts that — thin on production, heavy on promotion — ask why before you sign.

Questions

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

▼●What is the minimum I need to publish a book properly in India?

Around ten thousand rupees covers a proper edit, an original cover, clean interior layout, the ISBN and listing on Amazon as both eBook and print-on-demand. That is a complete, credible book. Anything below that usually means cutting the edit, which is the one thing never worth cutting.

▼●Should I spend money on ads for my first book?

Not before the listing converts. Advertising sends people to your product page; if the cover does not stop the scroll and the description does not close the sale, you are paying to show people something that is not working. Get those right, then test a small amount.

▼●Is an expensive package worth it for a first book?

It depends entirely on what the book is for. If it is a personal milestone, the essentials done properly are enough. If it is a business asset — building a practice, supporting a speaking career, representing an institution — the extra spend on design, audiobook and promotion has something to earn back.

▼●What do authors most often regret spending on?

Advertising a book that was not ready. The second most common is a print run of copies that then sit in a spare room. Neither mistake is about the amount of money, both are about the order it was spent in.

Once the money is allocated, pricing the book is the next decision, and the six reasons books fail is worth reading before you commit to any of it.
